The Importance Of Feeling Happy In Our Homes
More Than Just Letting Go
As a professional organiser and declutterer, people often assume that my role is simply about helping clients let go of their belongings. In reality, it’s so much more than that. My work isn’t just about reducing what people own; it’s about helping them understand why they have certain items, ensuring that everything in their home has a purpose, and creating a space that truly works for them.
When Clutter Disrupts Comfort
For many, home is a place of comfort, a reflection of who they are and how they live. But when clutter builds up or spaces feel disjointed, that sense of ease can quickly disappear. One of the most common challenges I see with clients is the accumulation of beautiful things—items they love the idea of but haven’t considered where they will go or how they will function in the home. This often results in a collection of lovely objects that don’t quite fit anywhere, leading to a sense of overwhelm rather than joy.
Function First, Aesthetics Follow
When working with clients, my priority is always function first. A well-organised home should work for the people living in it, making daily life smoother and more enjoyable. That said, aesthetics also play an important role. While the layout, storage, and practical aspects of a space come first, I also help clients consider how a space feels. A well-thought-out home isn’t just efficient—it should also bring happiness and reflect the people living in it. I get to understand who my clients are before doing any physical or virtual preparation with them and do that through my discovery calls and consultations.
Creating a Space That Feels Right
A common request I receive is to assess a room not just in terms of decluttering but also in terms of how it looks and feels. Sometimes, it’s about rethinking the layout of furniture to improve flow, repurposing sentimental items so they are used and appreciated, or styling a space to enhance its atmosphere. When a home is both functional and visually pleasing, it becomes a place where people can truly relax and feel at ease.
Displaying Memories with Purpose
One particular topic that comes up often is how to display personal items, especially photographs. Many of my clients have stacks of printed photos or digital images they love but don’t know what to do with. Recently, I was asked to share my own tips on creating a feature wall of photos—something I regularly discuss with clients. A well-planned photo wall can bring warmth and personality into a home, showcasing memories in a way that feels intentional rather than overwhelming. Creating a Home That Supports You
Ultimately, our homes should be places that support and uplift us. Whether it’s through decluttering, improving functionality, or adding personal touches that make a space feel special, the goal is always the same: to create a home that brings happiness. And sometimes, that simply starts with understanding what we have, why we have it, and how we want to live in the space we call home.
